In Conversation with Emile Bruneau

“In Conversation with Emile Bruneau” is a video series Bruneau envisioned to explain the fundamentals of his research into intergroup conflict and explain how they grew out of his own personal experiences. The four videos in the series include:

Introduction

Empathy

Dehumanization

Metaperceptions

Introduction

In the introduction to this four-video series, Emile Bruneau lays out the foundation of his work into how the brain drives groups of people to conflict.

Empathy

In this video, Bruneau talks about how experiencing the world through the eyes of his schizophrenic mother allowed him to build empathy, and drew him to study its effect on intergroup conflict.

Dehumanization

The belief that another group of people is less than fully human is a strong predictor of intergroup violence. In this video, Bruneau describes the prevalence of dehumanizing beliefs all over the world, and how we might change these beliefs in order to reduce intergroup conflict.

Metaperceptions

People typically assume others think more negatively about them than they actually do. Correcting these erroneous metaperceptions is one of the tools Bruneau sees as a path to peace for groups in conflict.
